What's the Final Fantasy 15 PC release date?
It's out now on Steam, Origin and Windows Store. We've got all the details on the launch right here, including all the new features. It's just one month after the launch of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age on PC.
And Mod Support is absolutely confirmed?
Yes! Game Director Hajime Tabata talked about it frequently, and now approaching launch while it's still being downplayed Square Enix confirmed it in an email, which you can see below.
When will mod support be added?
It's kind of already here! There's a few Square Enix-made mods that turns NPCs into Cactuars and a reskin for Noctis's weapons, but the rest - including the proper mod tools - will not come until later. However, Game Design & Development Manager Kenichi Shida told us "it won’t be a big gap, and we intend to be prompt in releasing new skins and upgrades going forwards." So expect mods fairly quickly after launch.
In this Japanese interview Hajime Tabata seemed to suggest that re-skinning mod tools would be out May/June time, but we're having this confirmed as we don't trust Google Translate...
What type of mods will be allowed?
“I think a lot of people do want the mods as free as possible, and with as few limitations from our side as possible." said Tabata, later adding "I don't want to limit people too much - this is part of the culture of gaming these days. These people - it's a thing they've bought, it's their game now."
We've also been reassured that mods will not be censored, with Kenichi Shida telling us "we don’t want to limit people, or the way they play, as much as possible... One of the big philosophies behind the creation of the Windows Edition was to increase the freedom of players to play Final Fantasy XV in the way they want to play the game... We’ll leave it free."
In short, you'll be able to mod anything and everything in the game.
Does that mean building whole user-made missions or just reskinning the car to look like Thomas the Tank Engine?
Takeshi Aramaki, Technical Director & Lead Programmer, spoke about mod tools and said "at first it will be quite limited, with the ability to switch around costumes and reskin things in the game, but slowly we’re going to add more and more freedom to the tool to allow you to do different things. For example, play around with the story progression and the levels". This will start single-player and even expand to the multiplayer. So, anything's possible! Even more, er, unsavory things.
You're talking about nude mods, aren't you?</h1>
(Sigh) Yes, we are. Tabata also said to PCGamesN, "when we were getting together for discussion, all the people together in the project were airing out their worries, [nude mods] were something most people were really worried about.” But, not enough not to allow people to do whatever they want. We can't imagine why anyone would want to do that, though.
Will there be Steam Workshop support? And Mod Support outside of Steam?
Yes to both! We confirmed with Takeshi Aramaki that Steam Workshop support for mods would be available alongside the ability to share mods outside of Steam. The Steam Workshop though is already here!
What's available in the Steam Workshop?
The aforementioned Cactuar NPC mods that turn all NPC characters into either male or female Cactuars, and also a 'Cactbar' weapon mod that allows Noctis to hit people with a big Cactuar stick. Ahem.
There's also the previously reported Half-Life Costume Pack for both single-player and multiplayer, which was previously thought to be DLC but seems to be available to everyone on Steam.
Are mouse and keyboard supported?
Yes they are! We've played the game with them, and they work surprisingly well - especially in First-Person Mode!
Wait, First-Person Camera Mode?!
Yes, that's a new thing for the PC version! We tried that out too in the preview above, and that also worked impressively well! And stop thinking about using it with those nude mods... yes, you were, stop denying it.
Think we can add co-op multiplayer?
The Comrades Multiplayer Expansion is in the game anyway, and will be ready for PC launch alongside a big update. As for a big co-op mode for the single-player campaign, if the mod tools are as expansive as Square Enix are suggesting, it might well be possible!
What type of System Requirements will we need, for mods and the game? I've heard they're quite high.
Tabata promises that unless you're planning to run it in 4K, a medium-range PC on par with current consoles should have no difficulty running Final Fantasy 15. Now, when someone adds in realistic lighting or more enemies then you might need a more powerful system. Here are the official requirements:

What about Final Fantasy XVI?
Final Fantasy 16 hasn't been announced of course, but Tabata is confident it will be built from the start with PCs in mind. Hooray. "If my team were going to be in charge of the next Final Fantasy game, we probably would set up the basis of development on that high-level PC architecture... But looking into the future, you have to consider cloud-based games. The answer might be different depending on how far down the line we're talking about."
Of course we're predicting Final Fantasy XVI to be a retro throwback in the style of Final Fantasy VI, so that might not be so big a deal.
